Printable Books and Covers     - Read about these files and how to use them. Be sure to read the printing directions!     - Skip to the files (if you've already read the printing directions.) ABOUT THESE FILES   (See pictures of some finished books.) The Covers are PDF files, available in half or full size. Some of the files may display oddly on your screen, but should look fine printed (as long as you follow the printing directions). Some are in color, but will print just as well in black and white. You can always use colored paper or colored pencils to make your covers more interesting. *Printing Directions for Covers: (Be sure to follow the directions for the size you're using. They're different.) Full size: In Adobe, change "Page Scaling" to say: "Fit to Printable Area." Half size: In Adobe, change "Page Scaling" to say: "None." Then cut in half after printing. For those of you asking "Why not just use one file for both sizes?": Because I couldn't create one file that looked really nice (yes, I'm a perfectionist) printed both ways, unless you own FinePrint. Not everyone does, and not all printers handle 2-in-1 printing the same way. So, after much trial and error, here's what I came up with. Enjoy! The Books will open with Word, Open Office, or WordPerfect. They are zipped .wpd files (created in WordPerfect), but work with other wordprocessors. (See why you may prefer these to printing scans of books.) *Printing Directions for Books: I print these in half size with FinePrint, but your printer's booklet setting may work instead. (Learn more about FinePrint, and download it for free.) Or you can print in full size as follows: Either change the page size in your wordprocessor, or use FinePrint, set to "1 up." (The latter method will stretch the page to fit, and enlarge the font, just the same as it does when printing from RC or a PDF.) How do these differ from Gutenberg files? These are formatted to maximize your margin space (justified at both edges), extra blank lines and obvious typos have been removed, text includes bold and italics where appropriate, the font face and size, and the format are all made to closely resemble a mass-market paperback. Also, since I was making these for my own family's use, I have removed words I found offensive, like racial slurs. (Yes, it's legal to change public domain books.) Here's how the books are set up, but you can change them in your wordprocessor, if you like. Size: The books are half size, but can also be printed in full size. (See directions above.) Binding Allowance: Is set at 1/4", which is suitable for comb punching (with or without sewing), glued or thermal bound books, or for pages going into a 3-ring binder. (May work for some other binding methods, too.) Font face/size, etc. : 11-point Times New Roman, with 1.1 line spacing. (These settings were chosen to resemble mass-market paperbacks.) Most have 1/4" indentation at the beginning of paragraphs, but some books for older readers may have 1/8". Margins are set at 1/2" (not including the binding allowance). If using Word or OpenOffice the formatting may shift a little, so you might need to adjust the following: 1) Make sure each chapter begins where you want it to (e. g. not at the end of a page.) Search for the word "Chapter" to find them quickly. 2) Make sure the table of contents still has the correct page numbers. (The t.o.c. is usually very small, if there is one at all.) Want WordPerfect? Visit Pricegrabber to find a low price. (Usually under $20.) Scroll down to see the "OEM" section for the cheapest version. It's the exact same program (not a bootleg), but costs less because it comes in an envelope instead of a box, and the manual is on the CD.
